International Health - Centers of Excellence: Vascular/Endovascular Surgery

Overview

Washington University vascular surgeons at Barnes-Jewish Hospital have unique expertise in standard and endoluminal treatment of vascular diseases. In addition, the 24-hour support from anesthesia, cardiology, renal, trauma and post-surgical intensive care physicians means better outcomes for patients.

High volume and the Medical Center access to the latest technology and developing techniques result in one of the lowest mortality statistics in the nation. Fatality rates are lower than 1 percent for endovascular repair of aneurysm, with a stroke rate of less that one percent for carotid artery endarterectomy.

All Washington University vascular surgeons are certified by the American Board of Surgery and all have earned added qualifications in vascular surgery.

Number of procedures

In 2011, Washington University vascular surgeons at Barnes-Jewish Hospital used the most up-to-date techniques to treat more than  5,500 patients. Many of these patients have complex vascular problems.

Specialized procedures:

This group provides the full spectrum of procedures, from limb revascularization through aneurysm repair, and the treatment of carotid artery diseases to the correction of arterial / venous malformations. These include: abdominal aortic aneurysm, thoracic aneurysms, renal aneurysms, arterial occlusive disease, brachiocephalic and upper extremity occlusive disease, aorto-iliac and lower extremity occlusive arterial disease, and venous and lymphatic disease.
