International Health - Centers of Excellence: Bone Cancer
Overview
Dr. Douglas J. McDonald, Professor and Chief of Orthopedic Oncology for Washington University School of Medicine, specializes in primary bone and soft tissue tumors that originate in the musculoskeletal system. They are rare disorders that account for less than 2% of the tumors occurring in the body.
Best Candidates
Adults and pediatric patients that have primary bone or soft tissue tumors of the extremities or spine are treated by the Washington University physicians in the orthopedic musculoskeletal oncology service.
Number of Procedures
More than 250 surgeries on both benign and malignant tumors were performed over the past year.
Specialized Services
Ranked among the top centers in the nation for cancer care by U.S. News and World Report, Barnes-Jewish Hospital offers leading-edge technology, support staff and rehabilitative facilities in a personal, concerned environment. The team approach, led by a specialty-trained orthopedic oncologist, works closely with radiologists, pathologists, adult and pediatric oncologists and radiation oncologists. Together they treat the cancer while ensuring the highest quality of life.
Research in musculoskeletal cancer is ongoing and focuses on improving the results of surgical care through limb sparing surgery. These research efforts have led to new and innovative techniques for removing tumors and reconstructing the skeletal defect, such that over 90% of patients are able to keep a functioning limb.
