International Health - Centers of Excellence: Colorectal Cancer Surgery

Surgical techniques are used to successfully treat colon and rectal cancer. These techniques create low connections in the pelvis to preserve sphincter function, which helps eliminate the need for colostomy. At Washington University, our colorectal surgeons work with oncologists and radiation oncologists to offer the best set of treatment options for each patient.

Colorectal Surgery Group

Overview

Washington University colorectal surgeons (pictured above) have some of the highest colorectal cancer cure rates and some of the lowest recurrence rates reported in the United States. These surgeons have achieved this success by removing surrounding tissue that is at risk of further cancer invasion. Barnes-Jewish Hospital also has one of 25 U.S. residency programs in colon and rectal surgery. Consequently, it is in an excellent position to train future academic colorectal surgeons.
